Caption: Rock specimen of sandstone from Stanton Moor Quarry, Dale View, Stanton in Peak, Matlock, Derbyshire, England.
Description: The stone is a fine to medium-grained sandstone with rather variable grain size, containing relatively common iron oxide, producing a pale orange-brown colour. It contains moderate flakes of reflective white mica (muscovite). British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED7364. The Ashover Grit (part of the Millstone Grit) of the Carboniferous in Derbyshire has been extensively quarried on Stanton Moor over a long period of time. Different quarries on the moor have different names for their products. Stanton Moor sandstone has been extensively used in Scotland for restoration work where the original Midland Valley Carboniferous sandstones are no longer obtainable. Stanton Moor stone has been used for the Dynamic Earth building at Holyrood (1999). Size of specimen: 5x3x2 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 10YR8/4, pale greyish orange.
