Caption: Rock specimen of Correnie granite, from Correnie Quarry, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Description: Coarse-grained granite comprising grey glassy quartz and reddish-orange feldspar, giving a distinctive colour and attractive appearance. This specimen is of Silurian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC5861. This hard and durable rock has long been used for monuments and prestigious building work. This specimen is a waste fragment from the stone sculptor Ronald Rae's giant 'Lion of Scotland', obtained during its carving in 2002. The Correnie granite was well known as a warm red granite with a more brilliant colour than the red Peterhead granite. It was used in the Municipal Buildings of Glasgow, erected in 1887, and for the Tay Railway Bridge near Dundee. Size of specimen: 12x9x2 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 10R7/6, moderate reddish orange.
