Description: The photograph is oriented perpendicular to the bedding planes in the sample, showing thinly-bedded parallel laminations. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S13729. The Ballochmyle stone is from the Permian and Triassic 'New Red Sandstone' of Ayrshire. It was deposited as a wind-blown 'dune' sandstone in a desert environment. Such sandstones are termed 'aeolian'. An example of this sandstone is present in the Meadows Pillars in Edinburgh, built in 1886 in order to display the different sandstone types being used in the city at that time.
