Caption: Rock specimen of sandstone from Ballochmyle Quarry, Mauchline, Strathclyde Region, Scotland.
Description: The photograph is of a bedding surface, showing the relatively coarse-grained nature of the sandstone. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S13729. The stone is composed primarily of grains of quartz and feldspar. Some of the feldspars are weathered to clay minerals and appear white. Stone from Ballochmyle was much used in Glasgow, and is reputed to have been particularly popular for the Glasgow tenements. One of earliest examples of New Red Sandstone in Glasgow is Hyndland Parish Church which was built in 1885. Size of specimen: 8x5x4 cm..
