Caption: | Rock specimen of sandstone from Locharbriggs Quarry near Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Region, Scotland. |
Description: | The Locharbriggs sandstone has a more dull red colour than many other Scottish 'red' sandstones. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC2635. Geologically, it is an aeolian (meaning wind-blown or dune) sandstone of Permian age. The distinctive red appearance made this stone popular in the early 20th century, when it was used for buildings such as the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh built in 1903. . |
