Caption: Rock specimen of sandstone from Bredisholm Quarry, Coatbridge, Strathclyde Region, Scotland.
Description: Medium-grained quartz-rich sandstone with strong red-brown colour produced by iron oxide coatings on quartz grains. Flakes of white mica are present on bedding surfaces. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S13252. The quarry operated in rock from the Carboniferous Coal Measures, which provided high quality ashlar stone, and was much used in Coatbridge. The quarry was abandoned in the early 20th century. Some of the buildings in the Glasgow area recorded as having been built from Bredisholm sandstone are the Established Church, Yoker; United Presbyterian Church, Blairhill; and St. Joseph's RC Catholic School, Tollcross. Size of specimen: 6x6x3 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 5R6/2, pale red.
