Caption: Rock specimen of sandstone from Laverock Knowe Quarry, Airdrie, Strathclyde Region, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a uniform, pale buff-coloured sandstone. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5816. It is medium-grained and relatively quartz-rich with flakes of white mica. This sandstone is from the 'Lower Coal Measures' Carboniferous rocks of the Glasgow area. It is typical of many of the Glasgow building stones which have a creamy-white or buff colour, traditionally referred to as 'blond'. Size of specimen: 12x8x3 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 10YR8/2, very pale orange to pale brown.
