Description: Fine-grained uniform sandstone with a speckled appearance. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5872. Stone from Stancliffe Darley Dale is one of the most commonly used sandstones for repair of stone buildings in Central Scotland. It has been used in numerous repair schemes in Edinburgh New Town where it has been used to match original Craigleith and Hailes sandstone. Stancliffe stone is from the Millstone Grit Group of the Carboniferous. Size of specimen: 10x8x3 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 5Y7/1, yellowish grey.
