Description: Simon Young of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory measuring the temperature at the margin of the 21st September 1997 pyroclastic flow deposits. The maximum temperature here was 365 degrees Celsius. Scientists wear special suits to protect them from high temperatures and when necessary a gas mask to avoid inhaling sulphurous gases. The margins of the deposit were full of charcoaled wood and other debris laid down by the pyroclastic flow as it slowed down. Months later iguanas dug holes in the warm pyroclastic flow deposits to incubate their eggs. The ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano has devastated much of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. The eruption of the lava dome-building volcano began in 1995 and volcanic hazards have included pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, vulcanian explosions, lateral blasts, ash clouds and lahars.
