Description: Two specimens of muscovite mica split, trimmed and graded as 'No. 4', 'stained' from the Little Scatwell mica prospect, eight miles from Strathpeffer, Ross and Cromarty. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7737. Mica is graded by type, ruby, green and spotted, it is further subdivided depending on clarity. The ruby type has seven clarity grades, green has three and the spotted type also has three. There are also ten size gradings depending on the number of square inches of area in the sheet. The grading of size used during the Second World War, when these specimens were processed is based on the Bihar (Bengal) classification. Pre-war India was a world leading supplier of muscovite.
