Description: | Two specimens of muscovite mica split, trimmed and graded as 'No. 4', 'good quality white' from the Little Scatwell mica prospect, eight miles from Strathpeffer, Ross and Cromarty. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7736. The No. 4 indicates specimens with a surface area of 6-10 square inches. During processing, the rough mica books are split into sheets one-eighth of an inch or less in thickness by means of special splitting knives. The sheets are then trimmed of all flaws. In this last operation the cutting knife is held at a low angle to the cleavage plane, so the edges of the mica are consequently bevelled. |
