Caption: Sectional drawing of a Scottish oil-shale retort, Pumpherston type.
Description: In 1894 the Bryson or Pumpherston retort appeared and was quickly recognized as the highest development of plant of its kind and remained so for thirty years. This retort, while retaining the valuable principle developed by Young and Beilby, added perfection of mechanical design and increased fuel economy. Throughput was increased from 27 cwt. to 4 or 5 tons per day. Retort costs were reduced to 1s. per ton per day against 1s. 10d. for the Young and Beilby type. A single bench of Pumpherston retorts took the place of two Young and Beilby retorts with a saving of labour of 32 men and 170 tons of coal per day, the new retorts being heated entirely by their own return gas.
