Caption: Bottle of heavy oil and paraffin, an original product of the Scottish oil-shale industry.
Description: Heavy oil and paraffin, an original sample from the Pumpherston Oil Company Limited at Mid-Calder, a leading company in the former Scottish oil-shale industry. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7718. An intermediate product in the oil-shale refining process, it is formed when the crude distillate or green oil is further treated and distilled into crude burning oil, heavy oil containing solid paraffin, and coke with a residuum being returned to the crude oil. This process is known as the 'second distillation' and is quite different from the first distillation in that to enable the easy removal of more crystalline solid paraffin the later stages of distillation in the 'green' pots is conducted entirely without steam.
