Description: | Crude solid paraffin is an intermediate stage in the distillation process of oil-shale. It is derived from a number of sources. This original sample is from the Pumpherston Oil Company Limited at Mid-Calder, a leading company in the former Scottish oil-shale industry. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7716. Crude oil is distilled to crude distillate which is further treated and distilled to heavy oil containing solid paraffin. This is then cooled, refined and pressed to produce crude solid paraffin and blue oil. The blue oil is treated and further distilled several times to produce a wide range of end products and as part of this process many of them isolate out further crude solid paraffin. |
