Caption: Sphalerite and pyrite, Straitstep Vein, north side, close to the Main Cross Cut, Wanlockhead, Dumfriesshire
Description: A specimen of sphelerite and pyrite from the north side of the Straitstep Vein, close to the Main Cross Cut, Wanlockhead, Dumfriesshire. Sphalerite or zinc-blende is zinc sulphide. It is an important and abundant constituent of some of the veins. It can occur in massive aggregates free from other sulphides, but it is more often mixed with galena and chalcopyrite. The usual colour is dark brown but some of the better developed crystals found lining cavities are almost black, colloquially known as 'black jack'.
