Caption: Photomicrograph of limestone. Light: XPL. Magnification: x2.5. Shinness Quarry, the Airde, near Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland.
Description: A coarse, grey-white crystalline limestone mottled with greenish calcsilicates. This specimen is Moine (Precambrian) in age. BGS sample number SL 169. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 34852. Photomicrograph details: Light: XPL, Magnification: x2.5. In thin section anhedral grains of calcite up to 5.0 mm in width are seen to interlock with one another and with diopside which forms thick prisms imperfectly developed and up to 6 mm in length. Tremolite is often present as small blades in the diopside and locally forms large prisms with replacing relations to the associated diopside. In summary, the rock is a limestone with diopside and tremolite, and a coarse-grained, porphyroblastic texture. The diopside appears as brightly coloured grains in the image.
