Description: Coarse crystalline marble with numerous phlogopite, calcsilicate and ore grains. This specimen is Lewisian (Precambrian) in age. BGS sample number SL 106. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 34585. Photomicrograph details: Light: XPL, Magnification: x2.5. The sample contains interlocking large grains of calcite within and between which are scattered grains of quartz, prisms of tremolite and flakes of phlogopite. Quartz is more abundant in some bands and is then accompanied by large grains of zoisite, containing vermicular inclusions of quartz, and by muscovite. Apatite, rutile, sphene, oligoclase and pyrite are accessory minerals. Sphene grains in phlogopite have pleochroic haloes.
