Description: Grey crystalline limestone. This specimen is Dalradian Supergroup (Precambrian) in age. BGS sample number SL 3. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 34429. Photomicrograph details: Light: XPL, Magnification: x2.5. The rock is composed of grains of closely twinned calcite, 2 to 0.5 mm grain size, subordinate quartz and alkali-feldspars in nests with which graphite is associated. Zoisite is present locally, yellowish mica and a serpentinous mineral are accessory. One large grain 1 mm across, of alkali-feldspar occurs in the thin section and there is some pyrite and a little limonite. The sample can be summarised as a limestone with quartz, albite, muscovite and zoisite. It is medium-grained and heteroblastic.
