Description: | A specimen of witherite from West Branch (New Glencrieff Vein), Wanlockhead, Dumfriesshire. Witherite is barium carbonate and is a gangue mineral, one of no economic value. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7693. Witherite is actually one of the rarest minerals in Scotland. A cavity opened up in the year 1918 at the West Branch, New Glencrieff Vein yielded the first authentic Scottish specimens. The mineral occurs as beautifully formed botryoidal masses up to eight inches in diameter. It is associated with barytes and is regarded as a secondary product due to the alteration of that mineral. |
