Caption: Ironstone and manganese from Lecht, Tomintoul, Banffshire.
Description: A specimen of ironstone and manganese from the old mine at Lecht or Leicht, situated about five and a half miles east-south-east of Tomintoul in Banffshire. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7678. The specimen was from the wall of the vein in the old workings to the east of the mill. The manganese is in a black powdery form. The mine has had a long history; mining commenced in 1730 for seven years then opened again in 1840 for the manganese. At this time the manganese was worth #8 per ton. The ore was broken up by hand and picked, the old spalling floors were reported to be still visible in 1920. The ore was dressed at a mill that had been constructed on the site and then sent to Speymouth, a distance of 45 miles by horseback, where it was shipped. In 1845 the price of manganese fell to #3 per ton and the mine became uneconomic and closed.
