Caption: Limestone from St. Monans shore, Fifeshire.
Description: The specimen is a dull grey limestone (dolomite) showing crinoid ossicles. It is from St. Monans shore, Fifeshire. BGS Sample SL 234. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7640. It is Carboniferous in age and belongs to the Lower Limestone Group. The lowest beds of the Lower Limestone Group crop out on the shore one quarter of a mile east of Coalfarm which lies east of St. Monans station. Fife possesses very large reserves of easily accessible limestone. They occur in the Calciferous Sandstone Series in a number of places in eastern Fife, in the Oil Shale Group, the Burdiehouse Limestone is the most important in Fife and in the Lower Limestone Group where the principal seam is the Charlestown Main Limestone.
