Caption: Limestone from Sursetter, Voe, Shetland.
Description: A specimen of Weisdale Limestone from Sursetter, 1.5 miles north of Voe, Shetland. A very coarse-grained, white, banded pale metalimestone. It is has a white calcite vein and is micaceous. BGS Sample SL 190. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7620. The Weisdale Limestone has been worked at Sursetter and farther to the north at Dale. It forms an outcrop 500 yards wide. Percentage composition of the limestone (S.L. 190) is calcium carbonate 88.04, magnesium carbonate 1.80, insoluble residue 9.63. Shetland has very extensive reserves of crystalline metamorphic limestone with a calcium carbonate content of 80 to 90 per cent. The limestones traverse the mainland in a north-south direction and are concentrated for the most part in the central portion of the island between Scalloway on the south and Mossbank to the north.
