Caption: Limestone from the Mains of Midstrath Quarry, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire.
Description: A coarse-grained, uniform, crystalline, speckled, pale grey limestone with dark weathered surfaces. The limestone from Mains of Midstrath Quarry is located four and a half miles east-south-east of Aboyne and is of Dalradian Supergroup (Precambrian) age. BGS Sample SL 78. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7605. It was worked in a massive, coarse, greyish-white limestone composed of calcite with subordinate scapolite and pyroxene. The stone, which is at least 30 ft. thick, lies horizontally or dips gently east at the east end of the quarry. The quarry worked the Deeside Limestone. Other quarries in similar rock are located at Gallowhill Wood and Wood Cottage nearby.
