Caption: Limestone from Sandydub Quarry, Saline, Fifeshire.
Description: A dark greenish-grey, very fine limestone with black fossil fragments from Sandydub Quarry, Saline, Fifeshire. BGS Sample SL 117. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7595. The limestone is the Plean No. 2 Limestone of the Carboniferous, Upper Limestone Group. This outcrops in Sandydub Brae dipping north-west at about 8 degrees. Fife possessed considerable reserves of easily accessible limestone, however most of the workable limestone is in the Lower Limestone Group, sources in the Upper Limestone Group should be considered of local importance only.
