Caption: | Limestone from Durness, Sutherland. |
Description: | A light and dark grey mottled rock. The Durness Group consists of seven distinct stratigraphic divisions. Four stratigraphical groups are composed mainly of dolomites while two, Group V and VI, the Balnakiel and Croisaphuill Groups are composed of limestones. This specimen has a mottled appearance. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7508. Throughout the Durness district the calcareous rocks dip at angles of twelve to thirty degrees east-south-east. The beds often form terraced outcrops that would greatly facilitate quarrying operations though important questions of access and transport could in some cases pose problems. |
