Description: This specimen is galena, lead ore from a vein in An Gorbh Allt, Rough Burn near Roshven, south of Loch Ailort, Invernessshire. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7354. Galena is the principal lead ore. It is lead sulphide and belongs to the cubic crystal system. It is usually found in compact granular masses and less frequently as lead-grey crystals. Lead ores have a wide distribution in Scotland. Many of the localities have been worked in the past, usually small-scale and to no great depth. The principal districts are Strontian and Islay, Tyndrum in Perthshire, Minnigaff in Kirkcudbrightshire and Leadhills and Wanlockhead in Lanarkshire and Dumfriesshire respectively.
