Caption: | Linlithgow Loch from the north-west. Glacial sand and gravel and dolerite sill. |
Description: | The ruins of Linlithgow Palace are prominent on the far side of the loch, in the right middle distance, and the escarpment of Binny Craig, a dolerite sill of Carboniferous or Permo-Carboniferous age is conspicuous in the distance. The loch lies in a depression in a west-to-east trending spread of glacial sand and gravel which forms the eastern extension of Polmont Kames. The near (north) bank of the loch is fringed by a narrow belt of sand and gravel, while more extensive deposits are present on the south bank. |
