Description: | Cliff E. by S. of Thorn Island, Angle. Looking E. Fossiliferous Beds in the top of the Upper Old Red Sandstone. The widely exposed bedding-plane on the extreme left yields fish-scales, etc., in the lowest bed of #18; at the hammer, a few feet above, much of a large Holoptyochius was found. At #14 (see A946), separated from #18 by a cross-fault, are soft, grey shales and sandstones with coal-laminae and plants. Red marls with sandstones follow as far as #16 - calcareous sandstone with marine fossils - and continue above (see A947). Beyond are the shales of the lowest Carboniferous (Km). (For #18, 16 etc see photograph). |
