Description: | Dwarfie Stane, Hoy. Orkney Isles. The Dwarfie Stane is the only chambered tomb known on Hoy, and it is the only rock-cut tomb known in the whole of Scotland. A small chamber was hollowed out of an isolated block of Old Red Sandstone, with two side-cells entered over the projecting sills. The entrance was sealed with a block of stone. The original blocking stone still lies outside the entrance, and is recorded as having been seen in position in the 16th century, but nothing is known about the contents of the tomb. |
