| Description: | The image is part of a thin section taken using a relatively high-power lens in order to show the various mineral components and porosity details in the rock. The specimen is of Permian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 7589. The sandstone is dominated by clear grains of quartz with a relatively high porosity seen by the presence of blue dyed resin in the thin section. The grains have a thin coating of orange-brown iron oxide which gives the rock its colour. The Permian and Triassic sandstone of the 'New Red Sandstone' in Moray are typically highly siliceous and well cemented. Colours vary considerably but typically yellow, buff and fawn sandstones predominate, unlike the bright red stones of equivalent age in southern Scotland and Cumbria. Sandstones from Clashach are typically yellow to buff coloured, but can be variegated with brown limonite whisps and patches. More recently dull red and pinkish stone has been extracted. |
