| Description: | Medium to coarse-grained quartz-rich sandstone with strong concentric banding caused by iron oxidation. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5825. The iron oxidation fronts result in varying colours of orange-pink and yellows, producing an attractive coloured building stone. Crosland Hill sandstone is a 'York Stone' of Carboniferous age. It has been used in Scotland in the latter part of the 20th century for stone restoration and repair. It is commonly used in Edinburgh for replacement entrance steps and platforms in the New Town. Size of specimen: 10x10x8 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 5YR7/4 to 10YR8/2, orange-brown to very pale orange. |
