| Description: | Elginia mirabilis is a restoration from footprints, bones and moulds, found in Permian sandstones near Elgin, of one the earliest and most primitive of reptiles. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 47. Elginia mirabilis is a member of the Cotylosaurs, sometimes called the 'Stem reptiles' since they gave rise to all the other and varied reptiles to follow. They appeared in the Upper Carboniferous and dispersed widely throughout the world during the Permian giving rise to both carnivorous and plant-eating forms. This specimen is from Cutties Hillock (Quarry Wood), Elgin. |
