| Description: | Belonging to the Family Arietitidae and Subfamily Arnioceratinae, Arnioceras is an evolute ammonite with simple lateral lobes and slightly divergent whorl sides. It is from the Lower Jurassic, Lower Lias, arnioceras zone and like Echioceras it is a zone fossil of the early Jurassic. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 3742. This fossil was found in Ardnamurchan where the Lower Lias is a marine series of sandy shales and calcareous sandstone, this contrasts with rocks of similar age in Skye where they are shaly and thicker. The ammonites are now extinct and had a shell composed of a protoconch, the inital part of the shell containing the embryo, the phragmacone, the chambered part of the shell and the body chamber, the last formed chamber where the animal lived. It is from the arnioceras zone of the Lower Lias. |
