| Description: | These are the fossilised internal shells of extinct squid-like cephalopods of the order Belemnoidea. The shell consists of a protoconch and phragmacone that is partly protected by a solid calcareous guard which is in most cases the only part of a belemnite preserved. The shell was enclosed by the soft body of the animal. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 3103. It is thought that they swam very much like modern day cuttlefish and squids. Buoyancy of the heavy guard would have been counter-balanced by the phragmacone chambers. The belemnites first appeared in the Upper Carboniferous but left a considerable record in the Mesozoic rocks before finally becoming extinct in the Eocene. This specimen of a belemnite is from the Jurassic, Corallian Lower Calcareous Grit. |
