Description: Ben Nevis, Inverness-shire. Cliff of hornblende-andesites, Lower Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) age, and the flat-topped plateau summit of Ben Nevis covered by frost debris. The Ben Nevis Observatory can be seen on the summit. The Lower Old Red Sandstone lavas form part of a large block faulted down in a Caledonian cauldron subsidence structure. The block consists of c. 2000 feet of volcanic rocks with an unknown thickness of underlying schists (not seen). The rocks are horneblende-andesites with a fair proportion of agglomerates.
