Description: Whale's Mouth, 0.6 km. east of Portknockie, Banffshire. Natural arch in Cullen Quartzite; unconformably overlying sandstone and conglomerate (Spey Formation, Middle Devonian). Natural arch, formed by marine erosion in alternating thin-bedded and thick-bedded quartzite (Cullen Quartzite Formation, Grampian Group). Just to left of path running above arch, are small exposures of conglomerate and sandstone of the Spey Conglomerate Formation (Middle Devonian) which dip gently to the left, unconformably overlying Cullen Quartzite, which dips steeply to right. The conglomerates and sandstones are overlain by reddish gravelly till, forming most of the upper slopes. Low ridges of loose, fine sand overlie the till locally near the skyline.
