Description: | Broadhaven Bay, St. Abb's from the east-north-east. Berwickshire. The rocks are Silurian (Llandovery) greywackes and siltstones folded by repeated broad flexures with an east-north-eastwards trend. A typical fold is seen in the bay, the detail of the syncline being much more complex than the photograph can show. The photographer was standing on Lower Old Red Sandstone lavas of St. Abb's Head, separated from the greywackes by a north-west to south-east fault in the bay below. The Silurian and Ordovician strata in this area are thought to form part of a structurally compressed, fore-arc accretionary prism formed above a north-west directed subduction zone along the north-western edge of the ancient Iapetus Ocean that occurred during these geological periods. |
