| Description: | Campsie Glen, 2.5 km. north-west of Lennoxtown. Stirlingshire. A resistant basaltic lava flow of the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation overlies softer sedimentary rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Ballagan Beds forming a waterfall. Resting on deeply undercut, relatively soft bole and scoria the base of the lava flow forms the roof of the overhang which extends back as much as 5 metres. When an outcrop of resistant rock is underlain downstream by a weaker, softer formation, the latter is quickly worn down. If the face of the resistant rock becomes vertical a waterfall is formed. |
