| Description: | Castle of Yesnaby, western shore of Orkney c. 3 m. north-west of Stromness. A sea stack seen from the north; the north shore of Garthna Geo is in the background. The stack and cliffs in the foreground are formed of sandstone with large-scale cross-bedding, which belongs to the Yesnaby Sandstone Formation and is probably of Lower Old Red Sandstone age. The coast in the background is formed of metamorphic and igneous rocks of the basement overlain by conglomerate and sandstone of Lower Old Red Sandstone age. |
