| Description: | At Little Galley Hill, near Bexhill, a submerged forest can be seen on the foreshore at low tide. The photograph shows details of roots of bushes in position of growth. Boles and trunks of trees (many still in position of growth) occur on the present foreshore around low tide mark. It is thought that it can be correlated with the Neolithic Forest Bed of Dungeness. This bed was produced by the drowning (due to subsequent rise in sea-level) of woodlands which bordered the coast some 2000-3000 years ago when the sea-level was about 25 feet lower than that of the present day. Today it is visible on the wave-cut platform. The submerged forests form part of a widespread peat horizon which extends along much of the south coast from Dover to Selsey. Submerged forests can also be seen at Cliff End near Hastings and at Dover. |
