| Description: | The vent contains a plug of microporphyritic olivine-basalt of Jedburgh/Dalmeny type and of Lower Carboniferous age intruded into Devono-Carboniferous sediments. The plug occurs within a screen of vent agglomerate and collapsed sediment. Dumbarton Rock is a crag-and-tail, the 'tail' of which descends eastwards beneath marine and alluvial deposits. This prominent landmark is one of a group of volcanic vents situated north of the River Clyde at Dumbarton and that cut the Lower Carboniferous sediments. It lies at the south-western end of the Dumbarton-Fintry line of volcanic centres. |
