| Description: | The image shows a cut and polished slab of sandstone showing a uniform medium-grained texture and pale colour. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5830. The sandstone is from the Millstone Grit rocks of the Carboniferous period. Sediments such as gravels, sands and clays which consist predominantly of the solid fragments of the waste eroded from pre-existing rocks, are grouped together as fragmental or clastic deposits. Rocks of this group are frequently referred to as detrital deposits. Coarser clastic sediments such as gravels and conglomerates consist of rock fragments. Medium-textured sediments, sands and coarse silts, are most commonly made up of particles each of which is a fragment of a similar crystal which has been mechanically liberated from the host rock. |
