Caption: | Specimen of mudstone from Bower Quarry, Watten, Caithness, Scotland |
Description: | The image shows a bed-top of a mudstone with markings caused by small sandy lenses. The specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5534. The dark grey colour of the rock is caused by the dominance of mud in the rock. The rock from Bower Quarry is sold as a crushed aggregate for uses such as roadstone. Several quarries in the Caithness area still produce the traditional flagstone for which the region is famed. The laminated nature of the Devonian mudstone sequences of Caithness and Orkney makes them ideal for this purpose, as they can be split into large thin sheets along the flat laminated bedding planes. Stone from the region is used for paving and as stone-slate roofing tiles. |
