| Description: | The sample is a very pale yellowish slate-like rock which has been fashioned into a tile shape. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5814. The sample was put into the collections of the British Geological Survey in 1938. It was noted in the records that this type of tile was similar to those used in Scotland for non-slip flooring. In the late 1920s and 1930s a considerable amount of slates was being imported into Scotland from Scandinavia. This particular rock type is more unusual, in that it is not strictly a true slate. It is a quartzite rock, essentially a metamorphosed pure sandstone. It has undergone considerable deformation so that the original quartz grains have become annealed, giving it great strength, and stretched out to form a cleavage along which it can be split. Specimen size: 15x15cm. |
