| Description: | The lava dome in January 1997 viewed from the north-east. Small avalanches of hot rock (rockfalls) cascade down the sides of the growing lava dome building up a substantial talus slope. The lava dome was growing at 4 cubic metres per second. The talus filled much of the gap between the growing dome and the northern crater wall (right of photo). The conical peak on the left of the dome is a remnant of the 350 year-old Castle Peak dome that existed in English's Crater before the eruption began in 1995. The ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano has devastated much of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. The eruption of the lava dome-building volcano began in 1995 and volcanic hazards have included pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, vulcanian explosions, lateral blasts, ash clouds and lahars. |
